Welcome To The PTSD Program...

The former director of the Veteran' Administration's National Center for P.T.S.D. in Honolulu, HI. has directed post-tramatic stress programs in the Department of Veteran Affairs for over 20 years. He led the 1985-92 Post Tramatic Stress Treatment Progam at the American Lake V.A. Medical Center at Tacoma, WA. and the implementation of the evaluation study for the very successful "Helicopter Ride Therapy" program for combat Veterans.

Dr. Raymond Scurfield explains: "I believe if a financially supporting Veteran's Service Organization were to institute and sponsor an updated "Helicopter Ride Therapy" project today, and ideally enlist the support of counselors from perhaps a mental health program such as the V.A. Vet Center Readjustment Counceling Program, from our experience, such a project would be a very successful theraputic experience for participating Veterans. Such a project also would be very appealing to the media and offers the likelihood of considerable media interest and favorable media coverage; such interest and coverage further informed the public as to the continuing impact of combat and how innovative programs are needed to help combat Veterans in their post-war recovery process."

"In addition", He adds, "The fact that helicopters are in wide spread use in the Iraq War suggests that such a Helicopter Ride Therapy program could be easily adapted for and meaningful to Veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Such a project could be a second phase and/or offers the possibility of joint helicopter rides together for Vietnam and Iraq Veterans. This would provide a meaningful cross-era and cross-generational activity of mutual support among Veterans of these wars."
